Gone are the days when the name Manchester United would instill fear on opponents and the days when facing Manchester United would be a sure loss. Nowadays, or at least before the season was forcefully brought to a stop due to the corona virus pandemic.
The following are the reasons I think fit to explain why Manchester United are not at their best currently and what could have led to their decline over time.
1. SIR ALEX FERGUSON WAS A GENIUS.
It was during the reign of Sir Alex that Man Utd were able to knock Liverpool off their perch and establish dominance in the English game. Man Utd claim to be the most successful club in England as a result and this success mostly followed Sir Alex.
Since his departure in 2013, quitting while he was ahead and leaving the ‘Red Devils ‘ as champions of England, he left the club over to “the chosen one” who was supposed to continue with what Sir Alex had already begun. As we all know,,, it’s almost 7 years down the line and England’s most prized possession has proved elusive to them and what’s worse is that during that period, their noisy neighbors (City) have enjoyed a run of great seasons.
Failing to find the perfect replacement for Fergie has really brought pain and misery to the club and will continue to in the foreseeable future unless proper action is taken.
2. Missing Cristiano Ronaldo
Being a Man Utd supporter automatically means you are a Ronaldo fanboy and do we really blame them. Ronaldo to Man Utd was like the Messiah to Jews, he was like a religion and WHY NOT? He raked in majority of their goals, contributed heavily to their winning and competing mentality and it was no shock when Los Blancos swooped in and grabbed him.
Man Utd thought he would be replaced and life would go on but as Real Madrid would find out eventually when Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018 is that, “once you go Ronaldo, you never go back.” They really tried to steady the ship after his departure in 2009 but it was evident that the Red devils were not themselves and any success could be attributed to Fergie.
Finding someone who will average 40+ goals a season easy is not an light task and 7 years down the line, Man Utd have been failing miserably at it. They have been bringing in flop after flop after flop in a bid to replace CR7 at Old Traffford. The list is literally endless and filled with superstars such as Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay and even the great Alexis Sanchez.
What’s interesting is that all these flops occured at United, once these superstars left to other clubs due to their said “underperformace” they were back on form, going on to be their club’s talisman as can be seen in the case of Memphis to Lyon club in France.
Bruno Fernandes’ arrival is the latest to spur United fans into a frenzy and they are most certain that he is what they have been missing. To them, the only way is up from here but the hard pill to swallow is that Man Utd will still remain a joke until the day they decide to take the replacement of Fergie and Ronaldo seriously.
